4 soldiers wounded in Yala bombing

YALA, Feb 23 – Four soldiers of a teacher and student protection unit on Thursday were injured in a bombing at a school in Yaha district of Yala province while on duty, according to local police.

Those injured are Sergeant Major 1st Class Jeeyapan Nakarat, Pvt Atit Buakam, Cpl Anirut Intanu and Pvt Anuwat Jaksuan, who sustained shrapnel wounds to their torsos and faces, according to Pol Lt Thanawat Boonmak of Patae Police Station.

Currently, the four soldiers are in stable condition and remain hospitalised.

The powerful explosion of the three homemade bombs also damaged a pavilion near the Samakkee School building.

Police and a bomb disposal unit inspected the crime scene and found that three explosive devices were placed in cooking gas cylinders and hidden at the pavilion of the school before being triggered by an unknown attacker.

Police presumed that the disturbance was carried out by followers of Abu-ubadeelah Romlee, a leader of an insurgent group in the region.

The Southern Border Police Operation Centre earlier reported, as of year-end, the death toll from southern violence has resulted in 5,243 fatalities, comprising civilians, security forces, monks, teachers and insurgents themselves since the insurgency erupted eight years ago in the predominantly Muslim southern border region.
